2014 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S review

2014 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S review-Kingautocars.blogspot.com. The new car replaces the outgoing V12 Vantage in markets around the world and, with the exception of the One-77 hypercar, arrives as the fastest road-going Aston Martin yet offered. The new V12 Vantage S is using racing technologies from models like Vantage GT4, GT3 and GTE competition cars. These technologies include a damping system developed by Bilstein, Brembo brakes and a two-stage Dynamic Stability Control by Continental can be completely turned off.

Designed and engineered to exploit the full sporting potential of the V12 engine, the new Sportshift™ III hydraulically actuated automated manual transmission provides motorsport-style paddle shift changes for optimum performance delivery and efficiency. The unit is also appreciably lighter than the outgoing six-speed manual gearbox - saving 25 kg.

The optional Carbon Fibre Interior Pack, which adds the material to the cars facia and door pulls, plus the availability for the first time in a Aston Martin V12 Vantage S of black pedals, further enhances personalisation options for those in search of a truly bespoke sports car.

2013 Scion FR S

Today I review one of the most highly anticipated cars of the year. I was lucky to have been given a proper drive in one of these to get a full sense of what it can do.

Introduction: The Scion FR-S also known as the Toyota GT-86, has a twin sister car called the Subaru BRZ. The reason being is that this is a joint project between Toyota and Subaru(which Toyota owns 16.7%). The project was initially proposed by now current Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda as a way for Toyota to rejuvenate its brand amongst younger drivers. While Toyota is successful selling cars to mainly middle aged to elderly drivers it has struggled significantly with younger drivers. Mr. Toyoda with a team of engineers led by Tatsuya Tada tasked them to build and make production ready an affordable sports car that emphasizes fun but is practical enough to use everyday. What Tadas team found was that in order to build the best car for this goal they needed the propulsion to be rear wheel drive and the best engine configuration was a flat engine. Since the flat engine was considered the best choice, Mr. Toyoda tasked Subaru to do much of the engineering of the car since Subaru specializes in building production flat engines.

Subaru was initially skeptical, and they knew that by having this car in their lineup they will no longer have AWD in every model they make. After Toyota convinced Subaru to engineer and build the car, Toyota was still able to contribute to engine design by adding their D4-S direct injection system. Toyotas marketing of the car showed they were very confident in the cars ability to sell after a hugely successful unveiling of their FT-86 concept. As the production car was nearly ready, Toyota invited as many auto journalists as it could to see if they could make any more improvements, asking specifically if there was anything they didnt like. The car was finally released to the general public to buy, first in Japan where it was so successful that all future orders were backlogged to next year to prevent any further delay in launching the cars in other markets.

Anyways, the introduction is long, but this car does have a special history. There is a lot of hype generated for this very car. Many car reviewers have claimed many things about this car and thus far the vast majority of them have been positive. Even though the car is available for sale here, finding one to test has been very difficult as even the demos have been sold rather easily. Thus I was lucky to have been given a chance at a Toyota dealer I know very well. For me this is also my most anticipated car to drive for quite some time. So I was really eager to see if it lives up to its hype.

Performance: The engine that was designed for this car is a 2.0L flat four engine, this design is also known as a boxer engine. The purpose for this engine over a traditional inline-four was quite simply how much lower this engine can be mounted, this lowers the center of gravity and as a result this reduces how much the car rolls in a corner. The power numbers for this engine are 200 hp and 151 lb.ft of torque, this doesnt sound like much but this car only weighs about 2700 lbs. You have a choice between a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic. For this test I only had access to the automatic, youre given paddle shifters to compensate for the lack of a manual. The acceleration time varies between manual and automatic as well, the manual is capable of 0-100 km/h in about 6.5 seconds, some managed 7 though. The automatic also seems to vary with 7.5-8.2 seconds. For driving on regular roads this car is more than quick enough, its got a lot of its torque early in the power band, but for full power you do need to hit the high end. The paddle shifters on the automatic are very good, very quick at shifting but for a car like this I highly recommend going with the manual unless youre unable to use your left leg. As an engine it may say 2.0L but it actually feels like a 2.5L, a word of caution though this engine does require premium fuel. The good news though is the fuel economy on this car is also surprisingly excellent, 30 mpg is possible with the manual.

My Score: 10/10 - It may not be outright powerful, but this engine is very good for what it sets out to do. Those who say its slow...theyre lying.

Handling: This car comes with electric power steering and my first thoughts were "Uh, no its not going to be as good" but I was wrong. The steering tuning is so good that I couldnt tell it was an electric system over a hydraulic one. Even more brilliantly is the weight, not so heavy like a BMW but not too light to make it boring. This is one of the best steering system set ups Ive ever come across. The actual handling is just superb. Given a limited slip differential your ability to take corners makes this car way easier to control a slide, and even if sliding isnt your thing the car has a lot of grip despite its stock tires being very regular tires. Body roll...seems non existent, honestly you cant feel it at all if there is any. Even the ride comfort is more than acceptable for a sports car of this type. With such comfortable seats and a surprising ride quality, its firm enough to handle well but not too firm that you get a headache over every little bump. This is one of the most communicative cars designed, in an era of cars which seems to have forgotten how to communicate to the driver. In such a light weight car like this, the rear wheel drive makes a huge difference in how balanced the car feels. This car doesnt boast a 50/50 weight distribution instead being apparently 55/45, dont let that fool you all this means is the car is easier to control in a slide.

My Score: 10/10 - Id give it 11 or 12 but thats the limit of my scoring, absolutely zero flaws in how this car handles.

Interior: As an affordable sports car, luxuries are just not something youre going to find in these things. So instead of showering it with nice touches all over the place, Toyota seems to have focused on all the areas the driver will interact. The seats are amazingly comfortable and supportive. The driving position is one of the best Ive encountered in a car. The steering wheel is very nicely done. The controls are in easy to reach places, not one button was placed in a weird difficult to reach area. The hand brake is in probably one of the best locations with the intention youre actually going to use it. Driving visibility is very good, the blind spots for instance are no larger than they are in an ordinary family car. The rear window is pretty large for a coupe. As for the downsides, most of the areas that arent focused on the driver take the hit, the plastics are on the cheap side, the climate control knobs are very cheap, the trunk is small and the rear leg room is only suitable for people if everybody in the car is under 54. To compensate for the small trunk the rear seats fold flat and were purposely made to accommodate carrying all 4 tires or two big golf clubs. The build quality is the usual what youd expect from Japan, very well done. This car is made in Subarus Ota, Gunma factory in Japan.

My Score: 9/10 - Very driver focused to the degree you can ignore most of its faults. Although for most people this isnt a 2+2 coupe, rather a 2 seater with a roof and decent luggage space.

Styling: Many people think this car looks rather plain. Im not one of them, yes its not as striking as the original concepts but for a modern car I think its well proportioned. Its aggressive at the front and its much the same story with the whole car. Much of the design was using previous Toyota sports cars as inspiration with the Toyota 2000GT as one of the big inspirations in the shape. While not the most beautiful cars, its still to me a very good looking one no matter where you look at it from.

My Score: 9/10 - For me, very good just not brilliant to match the way it drives, oh well.

Value for money: At $25,000 this car is affordable in the realm of sports cars, the realm of all cars this is slightly more expensive than most midsize cars. As far as RWD sports cars go this is a tad bit expensive than a regular V6 Mustang. If you wanted power, you know this isnt the car for you. If you wanted a lot of fun in a car but found the Mazda MX-5 either too expensive or too unpractical then this is the car for you. The amount of effort Toyota and Subaru focused on the driver with this car is beyond what every car in much of the segment does. The stats mean nothing for this car, all that matters is that smile on your face and this one definitely delivers that for very little. As I noted earlier if power was what you wanted, then this car will disappoint you but to be honest you were already better served with the Mustang, Camaro, Challenger and updated Hyundai Genesis coupe. Those of you like me who were waiting for that affordable, nimble, fun, RWD coupe then this is the very car youve been waiting for. The way I see it, cars like this you can enjoy even if youre making your way on the track slowly and because you can have so much fun driving so slow then itll always be a blast even on busy streets. Powerful cars on the other hand are best when the roads are clear and theres a long enough straight to experience the power long enough. Do it in the wrong place and you either crash or make your local police department happy for filling their speeding quotas. Considering the equipment you get in this $25K package and how much fun this car is...each cent in that $25K is well worth the money. Dont get it into your head though that this is a competitor to a Porsche Cayman, its an excellent car but if Toyota/Subaru were allowed to increase the price there are improvements they wouldve made.

My Score: 10/10 - Almost nothing competes against it and its superb in every area that matters.

Overall: 48/50 - This is the best car Ive driven. If you love driving, youll love this car.

Mini Cooper Cooper S Fully Revealed

24mhm5d Mini Cooper & Cooper S Fully Revealed
No more teaser photos and speculations as Mini came out today with the full press release of the 2007 Cooper & Cooper S versions. The two new models will make their world debut at the Paris Motor Show in September with sales commencing before the end of the year.

24mhmqb Mini Cooper & Cooper S Fully Revealed

UPDATE – CHECK OUT THE PROMOTIONAL VIDEOS HERE: 2007 MINI COOPER & COOPER S
2007 MINI IN DETAIL

Exterior -Unmistakable features of MINI design: Every body panel has been re-designed, but MINI’s successful form has been retained. The MINI design team brief was continuity in concept, whilst modernising traditional design details and engineering features. The second generation new MINI remains immediately recognisable visually and dynamically.
The typical MINI characteristics of short body overhangs front and rear, the famous wheel-at-each-corner stance and the high shoulder line rising towards the rear have all been retained, as well as the hexagonal radiator grille and the large, round headlights.
Subtle changes: The new MINI has grown slightly in size from the first generation in order to fulfil future safety requirements. The new MINI Cooper is 60mm longer than its predecessor and the new MINI Cooper S, 61mm longer. But to maintain the car’s unmistakable proportions, the designers matched the increase in size at the front by giving the car more rounded contours at the rear.
The round, clear-glass headlights are now fixed to the body and have been turned slightly to the outside to maintain the geometry of the car from the front. The indicators, formerly isolated in the front valance, are now housed within the main headlight units.
The radiator grille is now made up of a closed, self-contained element without the former dividing line made by the upper edge of the bumper. This design is reminiscent of the air intake scoop on the classic Mini.
The MINI Cooper S has a “stronger” front end due to the bonnet curving up approximately 20mm more to provide extra space for the turbocharged engine underneath and to meet pedestrian impact regulations.
Rising gently to the rear, the shoulder line is now 18mm higher than on the former model and visually accentuates the powerful stance of the car’s body. The rear lights are now slightly larger and feature separate external surrounds.
On both models, vertical air flow edges on the C-pillars and individual spoilers at the rear end of the roof enhance the level of aerodynamics to an even higher standard than before. The MINI Cooper now has a drag coefficient of 0.33. (0.35 on the previous model).
Customisation of the new MINI starts with a wide range of paintwork colours. 12 body colours will be available, seven of which are brand new.
Interior re-interpreted: The changes in the interior design of the new MINI are as comprehensive, but more immediately visible, than on the exterior. The design of the instrument controls and feel of the surfaces inside the car offer an air of premium quality.
Still the most striking feature inside is the Centre Speedo. It now comprises not only the analogue speedometer, but also all entertainment and, as an option, navigation functions.
The centre console below the Speedo is slimmer to create more space in the footwells for driver and front passenger. The door lock blipper and ignition key is now a round signal sensor. When inserted into a slot beside the steering wheel it allows the driver to press a start/stop button to switch the engine on and off.
New ambient illumination included in the optional lights package is unique in the automotive industry. The colour of the interior lights in the roof lining, the door storage compartments and grab handle recesses may be changed at any time in five stages from warm orange to sporting blue, depending on the occupants personal preference. This is controlled from a new panel of toggle switches in the roof lining. The toggle switches in the dash that operate the electric windows, seat heating and central locking were a real hit with current MINI owners and have been made larger on the new MINI.
A Colour Line option allows individual design of the MINI cockpit. Colour highlights in the lower sections of the dashboard flow on into the door linings, where they are combined with the materials on the trim surfaces. Colour Line is available in five colour shades, with the trim surfaces coming in four exclusive variants over and above the versions already standard on the MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S: glossy black piano paint, dark brown grained oak, brushed aluminium, and an extra-fine gloss surface.
A set of 16 chrome-plated trim rings for the air vents, cupholders and instruments gives the interior an even more sophisticated look. In the rear, passengers are offered more comfort with recessed knee cut-outs in the front seats lined with material rather than the traditional plastics.
Mini Cooper – Fully variable valve management instead of a throttle butterfly: The 1.6-litre naturally-aspirated power unit in the MINI Cooper develops maximum output of 120hp at 6,000rpm. Engine torque reaches 140Nm at just 2,000rpm, peaking at 160Nm once the engine reaches 4,250rpm. The MINI Cooper accelerates from 0-62mph (100km/h) in 9.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 126mph (203 km/h).
This ultra-modern four-cylinder features fully variable valve control based on the BMW Group’s unique VALVETRONIC system. This innovative valve management system adjusts intake valve lift and opening times within fractions of a second to meet the power and performance requirements of the driver. The big advantage is that it replaces the conventional throttle butterfly on “normal” engines to translate any movement of the throttle pedal directly into engine speed instantly.
In addition to variable control of valve lift on the intake, valve timing is also controlled on the outlet stroke. This enhances the torque curve to deliver not only high torque at low engine speeds, but also high power at high speeds.
Together these two technologies reduce fuel consumption, depending on the route the driver is covering, by up to 20 per cent. Fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is down by approximately 12.5 per cent. The CO2 emissions on the MINI Cooper are now 139g/km and 164g/km on the MINI Cooper S -a reduction of 43g/km.
MINI Cooper S: twin-scroll turbocharger and direct fuel injection: Displacing 1.6-litres, the four-cylinder turbocharged power unit of the MINI Cooper S now develops an impressive 175hp, up 5hp on the outgoing supercharged engine. Maximum engine power comes at 5,500rpm, with peak torque of 240Nm being maintained consistently between 1,600 and 5,000rpm. When accelerating hard, torque rises to an even higher level of 260Nm by briefly increasing charge pressure through a system named “overboost”. It covers the 0-62mph (100 km/h) sprint in 7.1 seconds and achieves a top speed of 140mph (225 km/h).
The MINI Cooper S engine is a Direct Injection petrol power unit. Intake air is pre-compressed by a twin-scroll turbocharger complete with intercooler. Exhaust gases meanwhile are split and forced through the exhaust ducts of two cylinders each, separated from one another in the exhaust gas manifold and the turbocharger. Response time when accelerating is virtually instantaneous.
The high performance of the MINI Cooper S is also enhanced by advanced valve management -four valves per cylinder being operated by two overhead camshafts. The camshaft on the intake side comes with infinitely variable valve timing to manage both engine output and torque while minimising fuel consumption and emissions. The exhaust valves are sodium-filled in order to off-set the higher temperature loads typical of a turbochar
ged engine.

Innovative technologies around the engine: The Hams Hall-constructed engines featured in the new MINI boast a wide range of innovative technologies. The two-piece bedplate structure of the crankcase, for example, is sophisticated technology derived from motor sport. The cylinder block and bearing housing are made of cast aluminium alloy, while the camshafts on both engines are composite structures, not the usual castings, in order to reduce weight.
The on-demand water pump in the coolant circuit helps to reduce fuel consumption since it is only activated when the engine has reached its regular operating temperature. This helps to save fuel in the warm-up phase and the catalyst is able to reach the temperature required for optimum operation earlier.
Manual Gearshift and Automatic Transmission: Both the new MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S come as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox. As an option, a six-speed automatic transmission will become available for both models. Paddles on the steering wheel allow the driver to change gear manually without removing his hands from the wheel.
Chassis and Sports Suspension: As with the first generation, spring and damper settings tune the chassis and suspension set-up of the new MINI Cooper S to be firmer and more dynamic than the MINI Cooper. As an option both models are available with an identical Sports Suspension set-up, comprising harder springs, dampers and anti-roll bars.
Front-wheel drive, a low centre of gravity, a long wheelbase, wide track, short body overhangs, a stiff bodyshell and the firm suspension all interact to determine MINI’s unique go-kart feeling.
The front axle is based on the MacPherson spring strut principle and features an anti-roll bar to reduce body sway to an absolute minimum. The central-arm rear axle is new to MINI and unique in this segment. Its longitudinal track control arms are made of aluminium that reduces weight by 6 kilos over the former model.
Benefiting from the sophisticated kinematics of the new suspension, the wheels offer improved grip over even more extreme cambers. The rear axle is equipped with an anti-roll bar on both model variants that makes a decisive contribution to the car’s famed agility, poise and safe handling.
New electromechanical power-assisted steering: The new EPAS (Electric Power-Assisted Steering) makes a significant contribution to the pin-point behaviour of the new MINI. Speed-related power assistance guarantees low steering forces when parking and, at the same time, precise responses at high speeds on the motorway.
The electric system offers the driver a choice of two different steering control maps. The standard set-up ensures a well-balanced steering response in all speed ranges. The second map is activated when the Sport button is pressed and the power steering becomes even more direct. The electronic map for the accelerator is also modified by the Sport button to give a more instant response.
Run-flats as standard on MINI Cooper S: The MINI Cooper comes as standard with 15-inch light-alloy rims and 175/65 R 15 tyres. Run-flat tyres are standard on the MINI Cooper S that has 16-inch light-alloy rims running on 195/65 R 16 tyres. In the event of a puncture, Run-flat tyres allow drivers to continue their journey for 90 miles at speeds of up to 50mph. Run-flats also provide stability in the event of a blow-out or sudden deflation. Seventeen-inch rims running on 205/45R Run-flat 17 tyres are available as an option on both models.
Safety at all times: Six airbags are standard consisting of front, side and curtain head airbags for the driver and front passenger. The extra-large curtain airbags (integrated in the roof lining) offer optimum protection from head injuries for the rear passengers.
Active safety is ensured in critical situations by ABS anti-lock brakes, EBD Electronic Brake Force Distribution and CBC Cornering Brake Control as standard on both models. ASC+T Automatic Stability Control + Traction is standard on the MINI Cooper S with on-off control by the driver, and as an option DSC Dynamic Stability Control.
Included within the option of DSC is Hill Assist. This feature holds a manual MINI on the brake when setting off on a gradient to prevent it from rolling back.

Passive safety was another primary aim of the new MINI’s designers and the new car offers all the prerequisites for optimum results in crash tests.
The transverse engine of the new MINI combined with the extra-large deformation zones at the front absorbs most of the impact forces in the event of a collision. Highly stable crossbars and reinforced door structures also help to keep impact energy away from the passenger cell. The same effect is provided by the front axle absorbing energy and passing impact forces on through the floor of the car.
The electric fuel pump is switched off automatically in the case of a severe accident to prevent any chance of a fuel fire. At the same time the central locking is opened and both the interior lights and hazard warning flashers are immediately activated to attract attention.

2011 Porsche Panamera Turbo S Overviews

2011 Porsche Panamera Turbo S
2011 Porsche Panamera Turbo S
Porsche has raised the bar for sporty four door luxury cars with the 2011 Porsche Panamera Turbo S. Its 4.8 liter V8 biturbo engine delivers 550 hp, 50 hp more than the already very powerful Porsche Panamera Turbo.  In the Sport and Sport Plus mode of the standard Sport Chrono Package Turbo and during kick-down in normal mode, the eight cylinder engine delivers fully 800 Nm with the so-called over boost function.

The addition of the new base model, 300 horsepower V6-powered Porsche Panamera was intended to broaden the range from its previously limited-to-V8 approach while simultaneously offering both a lower (entry) price point and improved fuel economy. This new engine is no slouch, even finding its routes in the V8 engine powering more expensive models - sans two cylinders.Modified engine control and improvements in the turbo charger are two key reasons for enhanced performance of the car.

The Porsche Panamera is 76 inches in width, making it an especially wide sedan. The Porsche Panamera measures 55.8 inches in height and 195.7 inches in length. This engine has direct fuel injection, infinitely variable intake camshaft adjustment with variable valve lift, an on-demand oil pump, water cooling with thermal management, a variable intake manifold and Auto Start Stop.

Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), (standard on all Porsche Panamera models), varies damper forces in an infinite process and adjusts the dampers to road conditions and the driver’s style of motoring. Incorporating adaptively controlled dampers with infinite adjustment of damper forces, PASM allows the driver, through the PASM button on the center console, to choose among three control maps – Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus.

Sport Plus thrills with the performance and agility of a full-fledged Porsche sports car.
Panamera is available with Servotronic speed-sensitive power steering which functions at high speeds by keeping the steering firm and taut. The Porsche Panamera comes equipped with eight airbags, including dual front, side-impact and curtain airbags

When the driver selects Sport or Sport Plus mode (the Sport Chrono package is standard), the ECU will allow over boost to 590 pound-feet of torque. With standard all-wheel drive, Porsche says the Panamera Turbo S will sprint to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds (knowing Porsche, that’s conservative) and deliver a terminal velocity of 190 mph.

The interior features standard bi-color leather upholstery (black/cream is an exclusive Turbo S combo) and Agate Gray Metallic is a new exclusive exterior color. The Porsche Panamera Turbo S goes on sale this spring.

Mercedes S Class Maybach fill the gap

New Mercedes S-class coupe will be more muscular and replace the current CL to compete with the Bentley Continental GT. Photo simulation of Autocar magazine

After death decisions for a decade Maybach disappointing sales, the new S-class is expected to fill that void with the stretched version.
